John F. Haggerty and James J. Valdes have been reappointed to the Harford Community College Board of Trustees by Gov. Martin O'Malley.
Haggerty was first appointed to the board in 2007. He holds a bachelor's degree in science from the University of Maryland and a master's degree in education from the University of Florida. He pursued advanced studies in higher education administration at The Johns Hopkins University.
Haggerty is retired from Harford Community College, where he served as an associate dean and athletic director. More recently, he was employed with Ripken Baseball in community relations related to the Cal Ripken World Series.
Haggerty has served on the Maryland Real Estate Commission, the Harford County Board of Parks and Recreation, the board of directors of the Central Maryland Chapter of the American Red Cross and was president of the New Harford Democratic Club. He represents the greater Bel Air area on the HCC board.
Valdes, who serves as board chair, was appointed to the board in 2007 and previously served three terms as vice chair. He is scientific advisor for biotechnology at the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center at Aberdeen Proving Ground, where he serves as the senior biological scientist and advisor to the U. S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command Group. He is senior research Fellow at the National Defense University's Center for Technology and National Security Policy.
Valdes holds a bachelor of science degree from Loyola University of Chicago, a master of science from Trinity University and a Ph.D. in neuroscience/chemistry of behavior from Texas Christian University. He was a postdoctoral fellow in neurotoxicity at The Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health.
Valdes is an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio and an adjunct professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland. He is the author of more than 130 scientific journal articles and 55 technical reports and has given more than 300 presentations to international scientific professional groups.
In 2003 and 2009, Valdes received the Presidential Rank Award presented by the Secretary of the Army and the Vice Chief of Army Staff on behalf of the president. Valdes represents the Churchville and Aberdeen areas on the HCC board.
Haggerty was sworn in to his new term at the Harford County Courthouse on Sept. 17, Valdes on Sept. 23.
