Harford honors Marine Corps birthday, ready to celebrate Veterans Day

Monday marked the 239th birthday of the United States Marine Corps, and Harford County Marines observed the occasion with a brief morning ceremony and flag raising outside the Harford County Administrative Center in Bel Air.

Harford County Detachment 1198 of the Marine Corps League has held the ceremony for a number of years leading into Veterans Day observances the following Day.

Detachment members gathered with county government officials to hear a brief tribute to the Marines from Senior Assistant County Attorney Michael Comeau, former chairman of the Harford County Veterans Commission and an Army veteran.

Harford County will remember the 96th anniversary of the armastice that ended World War I on Tuesday, as well as recognizing the contributions of veterans who have served out county in times of war and peace.

Veterans Day ceremonies are planned around the county, some at the traditional 11 a.m. hour when the armistice was signed. Included are the normally well attended ceremonies in Havre de Grace's Tydings Park and Aberdeen's Veterans Memorial Park at Parke and Rogers streets.

Bel Air's annual service will be held at Bel Air Memorial Gardens at 3 p.m.

County government is closed Tuesday in obsevance of Veterans Day.
