An Abingdon townhouse suffered an estimated $105,000 in damage Thursday morning from a fire that started because a burning cigarette had been left on a couch, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The two-story structure is in the middle of a group of townhouses in the 100 block of Laurel Valley Court, according to a notice of investigation from the Fire Marshal's Office. The fire was reported shortly before 8 a.m. after a neighbor walking his dog saw smoke coming from the roof. Members of the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Company responded and extinguished the fire in about 10 minutes. The blaze was contained to the living room couch, but there was smoke and soot-related damage all through the house, according to the fire marshal's report.First responders thought a kitten in the house had died, but it was later found unharmed, according to the report. Harford County Animal Control officers took the kitten to a veterinarian for a checkup. The resident, Edward Shrewsbury, told investigators he had been smoking before he left the house about 30 minutes before the fire was discovered."The neighbor, as well as the fire department, should be commended for observing and a quick response for containing the fire to the living room and causing minimal damage to the adjacent homes," according to the report. The Fire Marshal's Office is also still investigating a vehicle fire around 1 a.m. Wednesday at the I-95 Park & Ride lot in Joppa. The fire has been ruled an arson, Senior Deputy State Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire, a spokesperson for the Fire Marshal's Office, said.It caused an estimated $1,000 in damage to a 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck owned by William J. Utter, according to a notice of investigation.A person passing by the Old Joppa Road lot reported the fire. First responders were alerted at 12:49 a.m., according to the report. It took four firefighters from the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company 10 minutes to get the fire under control. The fire started in the truck's passenger compartment, according to the report.Alkire said investigators had not received any new information as of Thursday."We're encouraging anyone with leads or tips to contact us at the northeast office," he said. The phone number for the northeast regional office in Bel Air is 410-836-4844.
