Harford County's best high school golfers at its Class 3A schools ventured to College Park Monday morning to vie for team and individual Maryland State Golf titles.
Bel Air and North Harford both had team representation, while others from Aberdeen, C. Milton Wright and Edgewood were playing as individuals. The goal for all: shoot well enough to make a return trip Wednesday for the second and final day of state tournament play at the University of Maryland's par 71 golf course. Wednesday's play begins at 9 a.m., weather permitting.
When play finished after a slow, six and a half hour round, Bel Air's Cody Smith and Tyler Newton survived the cut. Smith led all Harford players with a round of 79, while Newton shot 83, which was right on the cut line. Graham Hutchinson of Walt Whitman was the overall leader with a 69.
Bel Air teammates Connor Small and Kevin Morrissey shot 86 and 88, respectively. The Bobcats team score of 336 was good enough for 12th among 22 teams. The top eight, led by Churchill and Walter Johnson, advanced to Wednesday's finals. Both leading teams shot 299.
North Harford shot 360 as a team to place 21st. The Hawks were led by Austin Wilcox, who just missed the cut, shooting 84. Other North Harford players and scores were Josh Nagengast, 88; Sam VanValkenberg, 91; and Ian Gibbons, 97.
Aberdeen's Mitchell Hardin also shot 84 to just miss moving on, while Aberdeen's Audrey Moon, the lone female from Harford, shot 107. The girls cut line was 88.
The other Harford players were Connor Johnson of Edgewood, who shot 88, and Matt Smith of C. Milton Wright, who shot 96.
Harford will also have two teams in Tuesday's 1A-2A state tournament. Fallston and Patterson Mill will both compete.
Playing for Fallston are Zach Billings, Dylan Wolf, Everett Cox and Dayton Ogrysko. Playing for Patterson Mill are Brendan Mahoney, Sean Powers, Alec Michaels and Luke Sharretts. Samantha Barnett of Patterson Mill will play as an individual in the girls competition.
