CMW gets second win in girls basketball play

The C. Milton Wright Mustangs girls basketball team won its second game in as many attempts Monday, beating visiting St. Paul's, 64-49.

Junior center Blake Bukowskipoured in a career-high 28 points to lead the Mustangs, while Emma Hahner added 16.

Cobras edge Rams

Harford Tech opened its season with a win Monday, coming back to beat host Edgewood, 43-41.

Edgewood led at the half, 19-16.

Breanna McAllister scored 12 points to pace the Cobras, while Trinity Grant added 10 points.

Aliyah Tisdale chipped in with nine points and six steals, while Breyana McWhite grabbed eight rebounds.

Cougars fall to Bulls

Fallston lost its second straight on Monday, losing to visiting Hereford, 40-29. The Cougars led, 21-20, at half.

Logan Gasior scored 10 points to lead the Cougars, who were a dismal 4-of-17 from the free throw line.

Bobcats lose

Bel Air suffered its first loss on Monday, falling to visiting Glenelg, 52-38.

Catia Johnson and Oceana Murphy each scored nine points in the loss.

Patriots topped

John Carroll (1-2) also dropped its second straight game, falling at Severn, 48-46, on Monday.

Lucie Passwater scored 12 points to lead the Patriots and Savannah Simmons chipped in with 11 points.

Opening night action

Friday night was opening night for a handful of Harford County girls basketball teams and, for some, a good night. Teams from Aberdeen, Bel Air, Havre de Grace, North Harford, C. Milton Wright and Harford Christian were all winners.

Aberdeen had an easy time on the road at Rising Sun, leading big early and finishing with a 74-27 win.

Stephanie Jones scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Eagles. Jones, a junior, has 993 career points.

Kierra Palmer added 19 points and Najze Norton scored 16. Endia Jones, who's back after a year off, added eight points.

Warriors open with win

In Havre de Grace's win, the Warriors erupted for 17 fourth quarter points that led to the 37-32 toppling of the visiting Fallston Cougars.

The Warriors trailed, 29-20, entering the final eight minutes, but used a 9-1 run to cut the lead to 30-29. Two Samara White free throws gave Havre de Grace a 31-30 lead, its first lead since Taylor Smith's basket just three minutes into the game.

The game was tied at 32 with 2:49 left, but Havre de Grace scored the next five points to win, the final two on Addie Richardson's two free throws.

Fallston had led throughout, 11-8, 19-13 and 29-20, after each of the three quarters, respectively. The Cougars managed just three points in the final quarter.

Smith's 12 points led Havre de Grace, while White added 10 points. Logan Gasior led the Cougars with 12 points and Kristen Shock added seven.

Bobcats beat Mariners

Bel Air opened with a 53-22 win over host Joppatowne. The Bobcats led, 29-14, at the half.

Natalie Neff led the winners with 10 points and Julie Bernoski chipped in with nine points.

Hawks beat Elks

North Harford knocked off visiting Elkton, 44-40, Friday night. The Hawks were led by Claire Macatee, Maddie Lambert and Savannah Testerman. Each scored eight points.

Panthers beat Rams

Despite leading at halftime, 22-15, Edgewood lost its opener, 33-30, to visiting Perryville.

Jill Miller's 10 points and Juliana Jones' eight points paced the Panthers.

Other scores

Harford Christian opened its Tip-Off Tournament with a 55-23 win over Red Lion Christian. CMW was a winner, too, edging visiting Western, 50-49.

Patriots split two

John Carroll opened its season Thursday, beating visiting Notre Dame Prep, 60-58, but lost on Friday night at Spalding, 54-29.

In the win, freshman point guard Savannah Simmons (16 points) drained the game-winning free throws with five seconds to play in the game that broke the 58-all tie. Ashley Hunter led the Patriots with 18 points.
