Marvin Jahvon Smith, 27, of Edgewood, has beern sentenced in Harford County Circuit to 50 years in prison for the June 2015 murder of 21-year-old Darius Preston.Smith received the maximum sentence from Judge Yolanda M. Curtin Wednesday, the Harford County State's Attorney's Office said in a news release Thursday afternoon. Curtin heard several victim impact statements from Mr. Preston's relatives, including his mother.In May, a jury found Smith guilty of second-degree murder and using a handgun in the commission of a violent crime.The murder happened June 16, 2015. Harford County Sheriff's Office deputies found Mr. Preston fatally shot on the sidewalk at Brookside Drive and Grempler Way.Deputies who were in the neighborhood conducting a traffic stop heard gunshots and went to investigate and saw Smith running away, the Sheriff's Office said at the time. Smith was arrested without incident.Investigators had said previously that the victim and the perpetrator knew each other, but a specfici motive for the slaying was not established, Harford State's Attorney Joseph Cassilly said Thursday evening."Our community and its families are being torn apart by gun violence," Deputy State's Attorney Diane Adkins Tobin, who prosecuted the case along with Assistant State's Attorney Dair Pillai, said in a statement."A message needs to be sent to the community that the courts will not tolerate this type of violence," Tobin said.
