Bel Air's Kieran McDermott wins race over talented group of runners

Kieran McDermott won the varsity boys race in the Gunpowder Falls Cross Country Invitational Saturday, leading some of Maryland's top high school runners over a 3-mile course at Jerusalem Mill in Kingsville.

The Bel Air sophomore won in 16:08 after pulling steadily away from John Carroll's Evan Moore over the latter half of the 3-mile course. Moore finished third in 16:38 after Michael Weber of Broadneck passed him in the last half mile to finish second in 16:23.

With McDermott's win and Austin Weiss' 21st place finish, Bel Air took fifth in a strong field of 21 teams behind Dulaney, Broadneck, Calvert Hall and Hereford.

Edgewood's David Dzambasow ran 17:00 to place 15th in the field of 160. He and Sam Verk, 22nd in 17:16, led the Rams to seventh place.

The Fallston boys finished ninth, led by Andrew Parks, 20th in 17:12, and Eric Baranoski, 28th in 17:34. John Carroll, with Moore third and Alexander Kirkland 33rd, placed 12th. George Schiminger ran 17:18 in 23rd place to lead North Harford to 16th place.

In the girls' race, John Carroll's Adria Pirozzi finished ninth. The junior clocked 19:45 behind another IAAM runner, Emily Craig of Maryvale Prep, who won in 18:33. Sarah Coffey and Kelly Shearer finished second and third to lead Hereford to the team victory.

Rosemary Gilliam placed 16th in 20:26 for John Carroll, helping the Patriots to eighth place among 20 complete teams.

Casey Welsh, 27th in 20:47, led the North Harford girls to 11th place. Morgan Smith ran 21:26 in leading Bel Air to 13th place. Kate Mullaney, 22:01, was the top finisher for Fallston, which placed 15th. Victoria Bankole, 22:21, led Edgewood to 19th. Morgan Dean, 23:09 was the first Harford Tech finisher.
