Harford opens library cooling centers Thursday, Friday and Saturday

With the heat index expected to reach 105 degrees over the next few days, the Harford County Department of Emergency Services, in cooperation with Harford County Public Library and the Harford County Health Department, announced cooling centers will be offered at all library branches during normal business hours Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug.11-13.The National Weather Service is forecasting hot, humid weather across the region for the next three days, with high temperatures in the Bel Air area expected to range between 90 and 95 degrees.The county 911 Center dispatched a call for a possible heat exposure around 10:15 a.m. Thursday in the Todd Lakes area east of Bel Air. No additional details were available.Harford libraries are open Thursdays from 1 to 8 p.m. at all branches except for Bel Air and Darlington. Bel Air operates on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Darlington from 3 to 8 p.m.On Fridays, Harford libraries are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at all branches except for Darlington, which is open from 1 to 5 p.m.Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at all branches except for Darlington, which is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.For updated information, visit www.hcplonline.org or the Harford County Public Library Facebook page.Harford Public Library branch locations are: Aberdeen – 21 Franklin St.; Abingdon – 2510 Tollgate Road; Bel Air – 100 E. Union Avenue; Jarrettsville – 3722 Norrisville Road; Joppa – 655 Towne Center Drive; Norrisville – 5310 Norrisville Road, White Hall; and Whiteford – 2407 Whiteford Road.According to the Health Department, heat illness takes many forms, including heat fatigue, heat syncope (sudden dizziness after exercising in the heat), heat cramps, heat exhaustion or the most serious, heat stroke. Heat stroke is an advanced form of heat stress that occurs when the body is overwhelmed by heat and unable to control its temperature.A person with a body temperature above 104 degrees is likely suffering from heat stroke and may have symptoms of confusion, combativeness, strong rapid pulse, lack of sweating, dry flushed skin, faintness, staggering, possible delirium or coma. Individuals with any of these symptoms, especially older adults, should receive immediate medical attention, the Health Department said.
