Man killed by falling Jersey barrier in Rocks State Park

One man died and another was injured in a construction accident near Rocks State Park Friday afternoon, Maryland Natural Resources Police confirmed.

Around 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of St. Clair Bridge Road and Route 24, the men were working to retrieve equipment from a Deer Creek stream bed, according to a post of the Harford County Fire & EMS Association Facebook page.

A piece of construction equipment nipped a Jersey barrier and sent it tumbling into the stream bed where the workers were, Candy Thomson, public information officer for the Natural Resources Police, said. Two men were injured, she said, and one died.

One man was hit by the Jersey wall. He was taken to University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where he died.

The other man was hit by debris and he suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Fire & EMS Association.

A third patient experiencing a medical emergency was also taken to local hospital.

Thomson said Maryland Occupational Safety and Health is handling the investigation.

"Because this is an ongoing MOSH investigation, we can make no comment at this time," Maureen O'Connor, director of communications and media relations for the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, wrote in an email Tuesday.

Friday's accident occurred in an area where State Highway Administration contractors have been working since last summer on a $6 million-plus project to shore up the stream bank of Deer Creek below the highway.

Work resumed following the accident, SHA spokesperson Charlie Gischlar said Tuesday.
