A somewhat uncomfortable Kristina Sciarra stood in the bar area of the Laurrapin Grille in Havre de Grace Thursday evening surrounded by family and friends, as they watched the popular Food Network show "Chopped" that featured Sciarra, the restaurant's executive chef, as a contestant."I remember when you were three, three years old wanting to help me in the kitchen" said Sciarra's mother, Marie Mercadante, as she sat at a table with others from her family, surrounded by 50 or 60 other well-wishers.Many of those gathered in the restaurant congratulated and complimented Sciarra as rounds on the show progressed, before making their way back to their spots to continue watching."My sous chef, Chris Stever, wouldn't let me in the kitchen tonight, they basically told me, we got this and kicked me out." she said.Unfortunately, Sciarra came up a round short in her bid for the $10,000 first prize among four chefs who competed on "Chopped."She made it through the appetizer and entree rounds before being chopped in the final round, the dessert round."I feel really good. Making it this far is a big accomplishment," Sciarra said as she exited the kitchen on the prerecorded show. "It will absolutely make me a stronger chef. My kids will be proud not matter what."Reasons Sciarra, who lives in Conowingo, was chopped? Her spices didn't jive in the appetizer round, which included squid rings, and her vinaigrette was "way too sweet" in the entree round, which included swordfish, according to the judges. Her dessert round, in which she made a Saturn beach and preserved eggplant napoleon with fresh whipped cream, was her "best dish.""I could eat a bowl of that," one judge said.In the episode titled "Smorgastarta Your Engines," in which the four competing chefs "start with smorgastarta appetizers, a sweet powder and prickly produce for the entree," Sciarra was confident as she waited after the final round."It could be a $10,000 dessert," she said.It wasn't, however, and Sciarra was "chopped.""I didn't win the $10,000 but that doesn't matter, what matters is right here," Sciarra said pointing around the room to all those gathered at Laurrapin Grille for the viewing party. As the show came to an end and the crowd learned that Sciarra didn't win, they still cheered and chanted her name as one of her co-workers popped a bottle of champagne and her family showered her with hugs."I'm proud of you, very proud," Mercadante told her daughter, as the crowd continued to chant, "Kristina, Kristina!"
