CMW, HdG boys soccer teams repeat as region champions

C. Milton Wright and Havre de Grace won regional titles in boys soccer Tuesday. Fallston wasn't so fortunate.

CMW (14-2-2) won its second straight Class 3A North title, beating visiting Westminster, 4-0. Havre de Grace (10-7) won its fourth straight title, beating Ben Franklin, 7-1, for the 1A South crown. Fallston (10-6) dropped the 2A East final, 2-0, at Easton.

CMW will meet River Hill on Saturday at noon at CCBC-Essex.

The Warriors will battle Brunswick today (Friday) at Northeast-Anne Arundel High School. Game time is 5 p.m.

In CMW's win, the Mustangs got on the scoreboard late in the first half to break up a scoreless game. Andrew Mastromanolis took a feed from Robbie Elliott and nailed a shot inside the far post.

The two reversed roles to score the Mustangs first of three second half goals. Mastromanolis found Elliott for a breakaway. Westminster goalie Greg Merrill charged from his goal, but Elliott was able to get a touch on the ball and loft it over Merrill and bouncing on into the net.

Elliott scored again, unassisted, a bit later and Alex Battaglia closed the scoring with a penalty kick goal.

CMW goalie Ryan Miller made three saves. Merrill finished with eight saves for Westminster.

Warriors roll

Havre de Grace scored twice in the first 10 minutes and rolled from there.

Kevin Vickery opened the scoring off of a throw-in assist by Nick Burley. Burley also assisted the next goal, scored by Casey Brown.

Burley scored to make it 3-0 with Christian Amici adding the assist. Elliott Scott added the final goal of the first half, heading in an corner kick by Jeff Newton.

The Vickery from Burley throw-in combination worked again to start the second half scoring, while reversing roles, Burley added his second goal of the game with assist from Vickery.

Kyle Barkley closed the Warriors scoring with an assist by Scott.

Havre de Grace Goalie Aaron Toepfer had three saves.
