And then there were two. Boys lacrosse teams from Fallston and C. Milton Wright both posted wins Monday night to advance to Wednesday's regional championship games.
Cougars beat Warriors
Fallston (14-2) and visiting Havre de Grace (13-3) locked up in a Class 1A-2A South Section I final that needed overtime to decide the winner.
The Cougars, in search of a third straight state title, used an Nick Esser goal in OT to push the Cougars past the Warriors, 12-11. Dylan Wolf assisted on the goal.
Havre de Grace, which led Fallston through three quarters nearly two weeks ago, led again Monday night, 6-4, at the half.
And just like that other game, Fallston battled back and with eight minutes left led, 10-9. Havre de Grace answered to tie the game at 10. Each team scored again in the final six minutes and were tied at 11, forcing the extra time.
Ryan Buckler and Matt Wollenweber scored three goals apiece to lead the Cougars. Esser and Andy Stump added two goals each, while Justin Williams and Wolf each had single goals.
Esser added two assists, while single assists were credited to Zach Zoeller, Williams and Wolf.
Havre de Grace was led by Kyle Barkley's four goals and Jordan Hawthorne's three goals. Nick Burley and Chris Parrott had two goals apiece.
Casey Brown had a pair of assists, while Parrott and Luke Smith had one assist each.
Fallston goalie Liam Wilcox made 11 saves and Warriors goalie Jacob Laubner had 10 saves.
The Cougars will play at Southern A.A. Wednesday for the region title. Game time is to be determined.
Mustangs thump Tigers
CMW (12-5) had a big second half to move on in 2A-3A North Section II play. The Mustangs outscored visiting Rising Sun, 11-1, in the second half en route to the 20-5 win.
The Mustangs will host Hereford in Wednesday's region final. Game time is to be determined.
Cade Dail scored four goals and assisted on five others to lead the Mustangs. Jacob Smucker added three goals and four assists and Dominic Venanzi also scored three goals.
Nick Kramer, Ian Ziemski and Kurt Leader netted two goals each and single goals were scored by Grady DiPeso, Andrew Mastromanolis, Robert Elliott and Kurt Kunkel.
Assists were credited to Luke Logan, Ziemski, DiPeso, Kenneth Watts, Mastromanolis and Elliott.
The Mustangs played three goalies with Philip Venanzi making four saves, Logan making two and Wyatt Graham making one.
Cougars beat Huskies
Fallston (13-2) continued its march toward a possible third straight state title Friday, beating visiting Patterson Mill (7-9), 11-2, in Class 1A-2A South Section I play.
The Cougars led at the half, 6-1.
Nick Esser led the Cougars scoring with three goals, with and Ben Claffee and Justin Williams each scoring two. Kyle McKeever, Matt Wollenweber, Brad Smith and Zach Roberts each scored one goal.
Patterson Mill's Noah Holloway had both Huskies goals.
Esser also had two assists, as did Williams. McKeever and Ben Claffee had one assist apiece.
Fallston goalie Liam Wilcox made eight saves and Patterson Mill keeper Will DeVinney finished with five saves.
Warriors beat Cobras
Havre de Grace (13-2) advanced Friday by beating visiting Harford Tech (9-6), 14-4.
The Warriors led, 5-0, after one quarter and 10-1 at the half.
Colin Dean, Casey Brown, Kyle Barkley and Nick Burley each scored three goals to pace the Warriors. Jordan Hawthorne and Trent Reynolds also had goals.
Brown, Burley and Hawthorne each had two assists. Dean and Reynolds also had assists.
Chris Parrott won 12-of-18 face-offs, while he and Burley had six ground balls apiece.
Mustangs beat Hawks
C. Milton Wright (11-5) moved on in 2A-3A North Section II play Friday with a 9-6 win over visiting North Harford (8-8).
The Mustangs led 6-2 at half.
CMW was led by Cade Dail's three goals. Jacob Smucker added two goals, while single goals were scored by Nick Kramer, Kenneth Watts, Grady DiPeso and Kurt Leader.
North Harford scoring was guided by Clayton Hood and Brett Hurley, who scored two goals apiece. Thomas Dolinar and Chandler Schmidt added single goals.
Smucker and Dominic Venanzi had two assists each, while Dail had one.
Hurley and Kyle Keating had assists for the Hawks.
CMWgoalie Philip Venanzi made 12 saves and Hawks keeper Cameron Broshhad 10.
Other scores
Bel Air (10-5) was eliminated in 3A-4A South Section I with an 11-8 loss at Franklin.
Tom Pfeiffer scored four goals to lead Bel Air. Goalie Gavin Hanley made 10 saves for the Bobcats, who trailed 6-3 at half.
Aberdeen (4-10) was knocked out of 2A-3A North Section II with its 17-5 loss at Rising Sun.
