The Joppatowne boys basketball team evened its record at 1-1 Monday, hosting and beating Elkton, 72-41.
Dominic Smith had the best night, pumping in 17 points and collecting nine rebounds. Jermaine Head Jr. added 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals, while Rashaad Gore had 11 points and eight rebounds. Montrell Horsey chipped in with eight points, three assists and four steals.
Cobras win, too
Harford Tech won at York Tech, 70-58.Tech led at the half, 29-19.
Fred Gordon's double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds led the way, while Darius Dangerfield added a triple-double of 19 points, 10 assists and 11 steals.Hunter Norcross added 10 points and 14 rebounds and Danny Paolucci had 10 rebounds.
Other Monday scores
Fallston dropped its second straight, losing at Perryville, 74-41, while Harford Christian beat host North East, 66-34.
HCS wins own tourney
Hosting its 17th annual Tip Off Tournament, Harford Christian defeated Covenant Life from Gaithersburg, 46-43, Saturday in a tough, gritty defensive performance.
The Eagles jumped out to an 8-0 lead and continued strong defensive play, holding Covenant Life to three field goals in the first half. Foul trouble, however, plagued HCS, and the Cougars were able to capitalize, going 12-for-13 from the free throw line.
HCS took a 20-19 lead into halftime, but Covenant Life made a run in the third quarter to take a two-point lead into the fourth quarter. HCS showed great resiliency and made timely plays the entire final quarter to win the game.
HCS's Moe Epps was named to the All-Tournament team and led the team with 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Sean Hughes was also named to the All-Tournament team and chipped in with nine points, 10 rebounds and eight steals. Jared Lanchak contributed 10 points and four rebounds.
HCS opened the tourney with an 81-37 rout of Red Lion Christian. Epps led with 23 points, 11 steals, eight rebounds and seven assists. Hughes added 19 points and Paul Franco scored 18.
Mustangs open with win
C. Milton Wright defeated visiting Thurgood Marshall on Saturday, 64-45. The Mustangs led, 22-8, at the half.
Will Hazelton's 18 points led the way for the winners, while Corey Bays added 16 points.
Hazelton added five steals and Mychal Stefanides had four. Stefanides had seven assists and Hazelton had five. Dante Brown grabbed 11 rebounds and Stefanides had seven.
Friday's opening night
Friday was opening night on the hardwood for a few boys basketball teams, and a couple – North Harford and Patterson Mill – came up with wins.
North Harford posted its win over host Fallston, 61-54. The Hawks ran out to a 13-2 lead, but led at the half, 31-28. Fallston went ahead by two in the fourth quarter, but North Harford's execution led to the seven-point win.
Brett Hurley led the Hawks with 18 points, eight rebounds, five steals and three assists. Andrew Klapka and Andrew Langan each had 13 points and six rebounds for North Harford.
Huskies beat Warriors
Patterson Mill defeated visiting Havre de Grace, 58-34, behind a big night from Rahmon Felder.
Felder scored a game-high 20 points and completed a double-double with 16 rebounds.
Teammate Tyler Jakubowski added 17 points. Josh Penn and Robert Surrette scored eight points each to lead Havre de Grace and Jordan Hawthorne added seven.
Aberdeen loses on road
Aberdeen traveled to City College in Baltimore and fell, 72-52. The Eagles missed 19 free throws.
Jaleel Gibson and Jayden Saddler scored 14 points each to pace the Eagles.
Bobcats beat Cobras in OT
Bel Air needed overtime in its season opener with visiting Harford Tech on Friday, as the Bobcats prevailed, 72-70.
Bel Air led at the half, 25-23, and the game was tied at 56 at the end of regulation.
Tech's scoring was led by Fred Gordon with 25 points and five steals. Hunter Norcross added 12 points and six rebounds, and Darius Dangerfield added 12 points and five assists.
Bel Air's stats were not provided.
Thursday score
Harford Christian took on conference rival and visiting Granite Baptist in its season opener and won, 64-44.
Senior Sean Hughes and sophomore Moe Epps spearheaded the Eagles offensively and defensively. Hughes was dominant all game with 21 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals, four assists and one block.
Epps chipped in 11 points, 11 boards, nine assists, seven steals and one block. Noah Akers added 12 points for the Eagles.
Patriots unbeaten
John Carroll improved to 8-0 on Friday, beating host Glenelg Country School, 58-41.
