Boys basketball teams from C. Milton Wright and Joppatowne each won region championships Monday night.
Harford Tech's effort to give Harford County three teams in the state tourney came up short.
C. Milton Wright's first region title win came at Milford Mill. The Mustangs (22-1) jumped out to a 39-25 halftime lead, but had to hold on for an 66-65 win in the Class 3A North Region Championship game.
The Mustangs will meet Centennial at 5 p.m. Thursday in the state semifinals at the Xfinity Center at the University of Maryland campus.
Corey Bays led the Mustangs with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Mychal Stefanides added 21 points, four steals and six assists. Henry Cuffee scored nine.
Joppatowne's win came in overtime over visiting Pocomoke for the 1A East title. The Mariners (19-4) outscored the Warriors, 9-6, in the extra session to win, 79-76. The Mariners were down, 67-63, with 1:27 left in regulation.
It was Joppatowne's sixth region title and first since 2005. The Mariners won consecutive state championships in 1990 and 1991.
The Mariners meet New Town in Friday's state semifinal round at the Xfinity Center.
Game stats from Monday's win were not available.
Cobras knocked out
Tech gave visiting Wicomico a tough game for three quarters, but the Indians pulled away in the final quarter for a 70-58 win in the 2A East title game.
Wicomico led after one quarter, 15-11, but Tech (17-8) led at the half, 28-24. Wicomico retook the lead, 47-45, through three quarters and stretched it out from there.
Senior Fred Gordon led Tech with 20 points.Senior Hunter Norcross added a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds and sophomore Darius Dangerfield finished with 15 points, six assists and five steals.
"Very proud coach, Tech basketball accomplished more this season than any team in school history," Coach Bill Jones said.
Mariners beat Warriors
Joppatowne used its advantage in size and free throw shooting to beat visiting Havre de Grace, 63-58, in the Class 1A East Section I final on Saturday.
The height difference forced multiple Warrior turnovers in the paint on one end and fouls on the other. The Mariners shot 34 free throws, making 24, while Havre de Grace, which had two starters foul out, shot just 13, making nine.
Montrell Horsey was the difference for Joppatowne, going to the line for 12 free throws, making 10. He was 8-for-10 in the final quarter.
Despite the disadvantages and a few ill-advised shots, Havre de Grace (20-4) stayed in it. The Warriors trailed 15-11 after one quarter, but led 19-15 early in quarter two after an 8-0 run. Kenny Sumpter's three-point basket was part of the run. Joppatowne battled back and led at the half, 28-24.
Havre de Grace scored the first two points in the second half, but Joppatowne answered with six straight for an 34-26 lead. The lead grew to 39-29 and was 44-36 after three quarters.
The Warriors let the game get away early in quarter four with three consecutive empty trips down the floor.
Joppatowne responded and had its largest lead, 52-38, midway through the quarter.
Havre de Grace whittled away at the seemingly insurmountable difference, and with one last run, made a game of it.
With a minute left, the Joppatowne lead was eight, 58-50. The persistent Warriors played on as Sumpter added another three-point shot and with Josh Penn's only basket, had the lead down to 61-58, with 11.2 seconds left.
Horsey (14 points) added his final two free throws with 9.2 left, while Havre de Grace missed its final desperation shot.
"It's the two smallest schools in Harford County. Havre de Grace is game and I expected them to be. They had a lot of confidence in beating up the Susquehanna Division," Mariners head coach Jermaine Head Sr., said. "We didn't play our best basketball and that was attributed to them, but a testament to us is that we've been in those situations."
Jermaine Head Jr., led the Mariners with 15 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Dominic Smith and Rashard Gore added nine points each for the Mariners. Fortune Okeigweigh added seven points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.
Krs Yancey's 17 points, six rebounds led Havre de Grace, which also got 14 points from Jordan Hawthorne and 10 points from Zayrron Blake. Blake also had nine rebounds. Sumpter finished with eight points.
Havre de Grace coach Brian Eberhardt said, "We appreciate the Havre de Grace fan support at Joppatowne today. I thought the turnout for us was tremendous."
Mustangs beat Dundalk
C. Milton Wright won the 3A North Section II final over visiting Dundalk, 71-59. The Mustangs led 31-29 at the half.
Mychal Stefanides poured in 23 points to lead four Mustangs in double figures. Corey Bays added 17 and Will Hazelton scored 13. Dante Brown had the double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Stefanides, who now has 1,400 career points, added six assists and three steals.
Duron Ball scored 16 points to guide Dundalk. Three others also scored in double figures. Chris Thomas had 13, Malik Winston added 11 and Kenyan Southers scored 10.
Cobras beat Elks
Tech captured the 2A East Section I final, beating visiting Elkton, 74-66. The game was knotted at 31 at the half.
Tech seniors led the way. Hunter Norcross had a huge double-double of 16 points and 23 rebounds, and Fred Gordon had a team-high 24 points.
Sophomore guard Darius Dangerfield finished with 17 points, five steals and eight assists.
