Town board recognizes Bel Air High senior

BAHS athlete, honor society student, volunteer honored for achievement

Bel Air Town Commissioner Philip Einhorn asked Bel Air High student Renee Sipos Tuesday what she does in her spare time.

Looking at all the activities she's involved in, it doesn't sound like she has much.

Sipos, a senior, was the most recent recipient of the Town of Bel Air's Student Achievement Award, which was presented at Tuesday night's town meeting. Bel Air typically meets the first and third Monday, but this week's meeting was held on Tuesday because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

According to the award presented by Mayor Susan Burdette, Sipos is involved at school on the girls soccer and tennis teams, the Gay Straight Alliance, Peer Helpers, CORE Club, National Honor Society, Math and French honor societies, Foreign Language Club, Environment Team, the Bel Air High School Band, Varsity Club, UCSC club soccer, GEMS Biomedical Program and GEMS Energy Alternative Program.

She also volunteers with the Bel Air Festival for the Arts, math tutoring, Thanksgiving in a Box, Field Clean Up Day, Baltimore Veg Fest, Summer Reading Program, STEM Night, Freshman Day and Flag Day, among others.

"Renee is a truly one of a kind student. She is highly motivated, very intelligent and passionate," reads the proclamation. "She has been such an encouragement to so many. Renee is truly a shining star to the Bel Air community and is extremely deserving of this award."

Mayor Susan Burdette, who presented the award, said it's her favorite part of the meeting.

"It's a wonderful thing we love to do," she said. "Renee is a student we are extremely proud of and lucky to have."
