Woman dies following minor accident near Bel Air Friday, medical issue suspected

A woman died following a minor traffic accident near Bel Air Friday afternoon. Police say they believe the death was the result of a medical emergency unrelated to the accident.

The accident occurred at approximately 4 p.m. on Royal Oak Drive in the vicinity of McKinley Court in the Bright Oaks neighborhood off Route 924, south of Bel Air, Sgt. James Plumer, duty officer at the Harford County Sheriff's Office's Southern Precinct, said Friday.

Plumer said investigators believe the woman, who he said was still alive at the scene, had suffered some sort of medical episode.

Trudy Ryan, 58, a resident of the Bright Oaks community, was driving south on Royal Oak when her 2012 Mazda struck a 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck parked along the street near the intersection with McKinley, Lt. Michael Crabbs, a Sheriff's Office spokesperson, said Saturday.

Crabbs said the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.

He said Ms. Ryan was "awake and talking" to EMS staff with the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, who responded to the accident, when she suffered a medical emergency.

Ms. Ryan was transported to University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, a short distance from the accident scene. She died shortly after arriving at the hospital, Crabbs said.
