Community reaches out to family of mother, daughter killed in Bel Air accident Saturday

Members of the Boulan family, of Bel Air, have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the community since Stacy Pell-Boulan, 47, and her 4-year-old daughter, Caitlyn, died in horrific single-vehicle accident near Harford Mall Saturday afternoon.&quot;How the community has come together shows us there's more good in the world than there is anything that divides us,&quot; Dawn Slagle-Skalka, a family spokesperson, said.Slagle-Skalka, who lives in Southern California, is the younger sister of Stacy Pell-Boulan's husband, Michael. She said funeral arrangements had not been made as of Tuesday.The family has requested privacy, but is also overwhelmed with the support offered by the community, added Slagle-Skalka, who said she would be traveling to Maryland on Friday to be with her relatives.Stacy Pell-Boulan, 47, and her 4-year-old daughter, Caitlyn, died in horrific single-vehicle accident near Harford Mall Saturday afternoon.The crash happened around 2:40 p.m. Saturday. Mrs. Pell-Boulan was driving south on Route 24 after making a right turn from Boulton Street when her SUV veered to the left, struck the curb along the median, then went on the median and struck a tree, according to police.The vehicle burst into flames after the crash. Mrs. Pell-Boulan's 16-year-old son, Michael, was able to get out, but his mother and sister were trapped in the burning SUV.Bystanders rushed over to aid the family, but the flames and the heat kept them back. Route 24 was closed for about five hours as Bel Air Police and Maryland State Police troopers investigated the crash.Bel Air Police Chief Charles Moore said Tuesday that the cause of the crash is still under investigation. He stressed in an email that police are working to ensure the family is being cared for, and the community and the family's church &quot;is doing an outstanding job at that.&quot;Slagle-Skalka said local first responders, representatives of Bel Air United Methodist Church, where the Boulans are members, and other people from the community have stepped forward to help.She said people have provided meals &quot;for weeks and weeks and weeks,&quot; as well as school supplies and back-to-school clothes for her brother and sister-in-law's surviving children, plus &quot;lots of prayers.&quot;An online fundraising page has been set up at www.youcaring.com/michael-boulan-young-sons-mikey-eddie-robbie-matthew-631560.Slagle-Skalka expressed the Boulan family's &quot;appreciation and their thanks for everyone who has prayed and stopped by and was there to help, everyone.&quot;&quot;They're just overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support,&quot; she said.Slagle-Skalka said her brother and his wife had been together for many years and had five children. The younger Michael, who is a student at Harford Technical High School, is the oldest, and Caitlyn, their only daughter, was the youngest.Mrs. Pell-Boulan had two older children from a previous relationship, according to Slagle-Skalka. Mrs. Pell-Boulan grew up in LaFayette, Ga. Slagle-Skalka and her brother grew up in Baltimore County.The Boulans raised their children in Harford County. Mrs. Pell-Boulan was a stay-at-home mother and a self-employed seamstress, her sister-in-law said.&quot;So many brides and wedding days and christenings, amazing work,&quot; Slagle-Skalka said.Caitlyn, who was known as Cattie, turned 4 years old in July.&quot;Cattie loved her brothers,&quot; Slagle-Skalka said. &quot;She was the light of our life.&quot;She said her niece had her father and brothers &quot;wrapped around her finger.&quot;She noted Caitlyn &quot;loved everything Disney.&quot; A plush Minnie Mouse had been left, among the flowers and candles, teddy bears and crosses, at a makeshift memorial at the base of the tree where the crash happened.Slagle-Skalka stressed the need for privacy, especially as the Boulan children grieve.&quot;We're very private because we're trying to protect them right now,&quot; she said.This updated article contains a web address for a support fund endorsed by the family through the Bel Air United Methodist Church.
