Havre de Grace's Beacon Health Center, the first clinic in Harford County to serve uninsured and underinsured patients, has been recognized for its work by the County Council.
The center has had 2,700 patient visits since opening Dec. 8, 2014, president and CEO Mark Rajkowski said after receiving a proclamation from the council Tuesday night.
The clinic is an expansion of services offered by the West Cecil Health Center in Conowingo and is a partnership with University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health, which is based in Harford.
"We are growing extremely fast," Rajkowski said in noting that West Cecil and Beacon pull patients from a 50-mile radius.
"It has been an honor coming to Harford County, and Harford County has been very accommodating," Rajkowski said.
Upper Chesapeake Health first started a free clinic through its HealthLink community program, he said.
Patients with full insurance coverage are also welcome to visit Beacon Health. The 4,500-square-foot center, at 253 Lewis Lane, offers services including primary care, behavioral health and women's care. It also has interpreters for Spanish speakers.
Grant funding for the center was provided by Upper Chesapeake, the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Inc., and The Dresher Foundation.
County Councilman Curtis Beulah, who represents Havre de Grace and presented the proclamation, thanked Beacon's leaders "for giving back to the community in a way that will truly affect lives."
