CMW mounts serious comeback
C. Milton Wright skipper Joe Stetka has been managing baseball teams for a long time, and said his team's comeback Tuesday afternoon, when the Mustangs overcame a 14-run deficit to defeat visiting North East, 17-16, was outside the realm of his experience.
"Unreal," Stetka said after the game. "I've been coaching for 20 years now, and I've never seen anything like that. North East is a very good team, and they can swing the bats."
Trailing the Indians by 14 after 3-1/2 innings, the Mustangs started their comeback in the home half of the fourth, and by the bottom of the seventh, after North East had added two more tallies, CMW was down, 16-13. The Mustangs' Ricky Scheeler rapped out a three-RBI double to knot the contest, 16-16, and his hit was followed by a walk-off triple by Dakota Sterns down the left field line.
CMW pitcher Jeremy Stewart went 3-1/3 innings in relief to earn his first win of the season. At the plate, Stewart was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Stern finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Jake Labe was 2-for-4 in the victory. Bryce Schulz belted a pair of singles for CMW, while Matt Hennigan was 4-for-4 with four runs. Scheeler went 2-for-4 with a game-best five RBIs.
The win put CMW at 4-4 overall and evened the Mustangs' Chesapeake (upper) Division record at 3-3.
