Hawks rally, win
Down to its last strike, the North Harford Hawks baseball team put together a rally that led to a 5-1, extra-inning win over previously unbeaten host Patterson Mill on Thursday in UCBAC Chesapeake Division action.
"It takes some timely hitting sometimes and a couple mistakes, things like that help," Hawks coach Tim Larrimore said.
The Hawks were down 1-0 with two outs in the top of the seventh with Andrew Schutt down in the count, 1-2, to Huskies senior left-hander Jeff Noss. Schutt lifted a high fly ball to fairly deep center field, where Matt Sprouse seemed to have a line on it.
The ball, however, caromed off Sprouse, who was knocked to the ground. Once recovered, Sprouse relayed the ball back in, but not before Schutt had reached third base.
Kyle Munson then stepped up and drilled a line drive into right center to plate Schutt with the tie run.
Noss got the next batter to fly out, but the damage was done.
Noss had shut down the Hawks on two hits, striking out eight through the previous six innings.
"I can see why they were 7-0 coming into this game," Larrimore said, referring to Noss' efforts. "No doubt, he is a very good pitcher."
Patterson Mill put the winning run on in the bottom of the seventh, but Hawks pitcher Sean Bowling, who was equally impressive, pitched out of it.
In the eighth, the Hawks took control against reliever Billy Benson, who had caught the first seven innings.
Benson issued one-out, back-to-back walks, which were followed by a bunt single by Braden Stinar to load the bases.
Luke Johnson drove in the winning, go-ahead with a sacrifice fly.
Colin Bowling doubled in two more in the inning and Schutt added an RBI single.
Sean Bowling came back out to pitch the eighth for the win. He allowed a single and his only walk before getting a groundout to end it.
Pitcher Bowling allowed five hits and the walk, while striking out nine.
"I try to come out and do my job the best that I could," Bowling said. "I got a lot of help from my defense and we got some late hits during the game which really helped me out."
The Huskies had taken the 1-0 lead in the fourth. Benson hit a leadoff double and Noss drove home courtesy runner Cory Lytle with a bloop single over second base.
On the mound, Noss was cruising until the seventh. At one point, he had retired 15 straight batters. He finished with nine strikeouts.
"You can point at one play, but there's about 15 plays in that game where the game could have changed," Patterson Mill coach Matt Roseland said. "Jeff Noss has to be noted for what he did today. His name has to be up there with the best pitchers in the county."
The win kept the Hawks (3-2 league, 5-2 overall) within reach of the Huskies (3-1, 7-1) in the division.
Eagles get win
Aberdeen defeated visiting Dundalk, 9-2, in non-league action at Cal Ripken Sr. Field Thursday.
