Aberdeen Proving Ground to host Armed Forces Week

Aberdeen Proving Ground is hosting its annual Armed Forces Week festivities this week running through Thursday, May 14.

This year's main event will be Our Community Salutes, a new ceremony, starting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13, that honors new recruits who have enlisted in the armed forces.

The Our Community Salutes ceremony is open to the public, and many static displays will be available for view throughout the post starting at noon. APG's Bike to Work Day also will be May 13.

Our Community Salutes and all other events that day will take place at the APG Recreation Center.

"The commander's intent is to open Aberdeen Proving Ground to the public," Capt. Nicholas Milano, a coordinator for Armed Forces Week, said.

Open-house demonstrations of warfare tactics and weaponry have drawn crowds in the past, but security concerns and later budget constraints and federal sequestration have curtailed those activities. As was the case last year, there will be no live fire or other active demonstrations during Armed Forces Week 2015.

The Armed Forces Week celebration began Saturday with a military retiree appreciation day.

The annual Armed Forces Week golf tournament is being held Monday at Ruggles Golf Course.

All APG soldiers are set to take part in the Armed Forces Run at 6:15 a.m. on May 12.

At the Our Community Salutes event, people can stop by the Employee Assistance Program booth from noon to 4 p.m. for a chance to win two free tickets to a May 30 Orioles game.

"I think we will have a large turnout," Milano said. "We are really trying to make a push for the community, [to say] hey, come see what we've got."

Anyone coming on the installation must show a government-issued ID, such as a driver's license. Attendees can also show a military retiree card, common access card or similar IDs.
