One of Aberdeen's pedestrian crossings for its MARC/Amtrak station underwent some repair work during Thursday's major snowstorm.

The pedestrian tunnel had to be fixed after water-related issues that day, Amtrak spokesperson Christina Leeds said.

"Some of the plaster on the ceiling of the tunnel got wet and started crumbling and falling," Leeds said via email. "We fixed the water leak and knocked down all of the remaining loose plaster and cleared the area of debris."

Leeds said the leak was caused by a cracked drain pipe.

"It was raining that day and the pipe carries water from the roof drains of the station," she said. "It does not appear that there are any structural problems with the tunnel."

"The loose plaster was removed and the tunnel was re-opened for pedestrian traffic," she added.

The work was completed and the tunnel reopened the same day.

Built in 1943 and updated in 1993 by Amtrak, the station and its gritty-looking overpass and pedestrian tunnel are part of Aberdeen's "Station Square" vision for a more pedestrian-friendly area in the future.
