An Aberdeen man died early Saturday, after the driver of the car in which he was a passenger swerved to avoid another car, struck a pole and flipped over along Route 40, Maryland State Police reported.
The accident happened around 11:30 p.m. Friday. Stephen Lee Piper, 27, was riding in a 1990 Honda Civic driven by Zachary Brian Russell, 23, of Edgewood, according to a State Police press release issued Saturday.
Russell was driving west on Route 40 near the intersection with Route 715 – the visitor access road to Aberdeen Proving Ground – and he was in the right-hand lane. A white SUV was in the left-hand lane next to him.
A vehicle identified as a "black passenger car" was driven onto the left shoulder of the highway to pass the SUV, and the driver of the SUV swerved to avoid it.
The SUV driver cut in front of Russell's Civic, and Russell then swerved out of the way, according to the news release.
