Aberdeen man charged with setting off fire alarm at apartment complex

An Aberdeen man has been charged with making a false fire alarm and obstructing firefighters after allegedly setting off an alarm at Burton Manor Apartments on July 31, the Office of the State Fire Marshal said.

The apartment complex is in the 600 block of Cornell Street in Aberdeen.

Adam L. Duff, 25, was served with a criminal summons after Aberdeen firefighters responded to an alarm at 3:44 a.m. on July 31, according to a statement from the Fire Marshal's Office..

Firefighters found many tenants leaving the four-story building when they arrived.

Duff never identified himself as the person who activated the alarm or directed firefighters to a possible cause, according to the statement.

He provided no motive about why he allegedly activated the alarm, investigators said.

If convicted, Duff could face up to eight years in jail, $5,000 in fines or both.

Duff has a trial date set for Sept. 30 in Harford County District Court in Bel Air, according to online court records. His address in court records is the same apartment complex where the false alarm occurred.
