A Belcamp man died Saturday morning at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, two days after Aberdeen Police said he fell and hit his head while in their the custody at Aberdeen Police Department.
Barry Lee Berkenkemper, 59, was arrested by Aberdeen Police along Route 40 around 2:40 p.m. Thursday and charged with public intoxication and failure to obey a lawful police order, the Aberdeen Police Department said in a news release.
Mr. Berkenkemper's body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy.
Bruce Goldfarb, spokesperson for the medical examiner's office, said Wednesday that Mr. Berkenkemper's case is still under investigation and a cause of death has not been determined yet.
Mr. Berkenkemper was being taken to a detention cell in the booking area of the Aberdeen police station when he fell and hit his head, according to the APD news release.
Sgt. Al Severn said Mr. Berkenkemper hit his head on the floor.
Officers immediately notified an ambulance and paramedics from Aberdeen Fire Department responded and took Mr. Berkenkemper to Harford Memorial Hospital; he was later transported to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
Police were notified early Saturday morning that Mr. Berkenkemper had died, according to the news release.
The incident also remains under internal investigation by the Aberdeen Police Department.
