Route 40 closed to eastbound traffic in Belcamp for emergency roadwork

Route 40 in Belcamp was shut down to eastbound traffic Monday after a gas main was struck, highway and emergency officials reported.

Maryland State Highway Administration reported at about 11:30 a.m. that all lanes were closed between Long Bar Harbor Road and Bata Boulevard for emergency work.

A gas main was struck by a worker during a sewer main project undertaken by Harford County near Pamela Road, SHA spokesperson Charlie Gischlar said.

SHA was assisting with traffic control in the area, he said.

Abingdon Volunteer Fire Company was also assisting with the 4-foot natural gas line, according to the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company.

Eastbound traffic was at a standstill north of Long Bar Harbor Road, as well as on Route 7 east of Abingdon Road as of about 2:50 p.m., according to local traffic reports.
