Understanding the fear, anguish, terror, anger and emotional distress of school students who survived the Parkland, Fla., school murders is a rational human response to the incomprehensible act of evil that drove Nikolas Cruz, 19, to end the lives of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
The equally sad fact is that this tragic event could have been derailed or prevented if the authorities having jurisdiction, namely the Broward County Sheriff's Department, who had responded over 40 times to Cruz-related domestic disturbances, missing person and animal abuse responses for several years, had acted proactively to stop his behavior.
There were many other signs of a deeply disturbed Nikolas Cruz, but no one seemed to connect the dots before he purchased a legal firearm and went on his rampage as police officers stayed outside the school during the killing.
Now we have the predictable anti-gun movement by those leading with raw emotion and collective activism against the 2nd Amendment, the Constitution and any politician who received funds from the NRA. By using the young and their idealistic sense of outrage, well-funded and politically motivated liberal millionaires hide their real agenda behind the tragedy of Parkland: the repeal of the 2nd Amendment and gun confiscation.
Of course, no one is allowed to criticize these young crusaders because doing so labels one a bigot, or insensitive, or an enabler of continuing tragedies. Nothing is further from the truth in regard to how conservatives feel. No one wants schools, churches, movie theaters or other public venues to suffer this kind of evil, not the NRA, its membership, and anyone who understands what the 2nd Amendment protects.
What failed Parkland was inaction during the years that Cruz was bent on a road of self-destruction. The authorities knew it and let it continue. Cruz was a killer in the making and no one acted on his threats.
We can all agree that protests are an American right. The Constitution's First Amendment allows free speech as a right of the people to redress their grievances. But a protest that doesn't allow an opposing opinion to surface is another form of suppressive mind control.
The Second Amendment provides for the people to have the means to prevent a tyrannical government takeover and means of self-defense. It is an individual right and the Supreme Court has confirmed this fact. One cannot remove the 2nd and assume the 1st or any other amendment will survive. Our constitution is not outdated, it carries the same weight as it did when written. It is what makes us free.
By the same token, blaming Senator Rubio, the NRA and the Constitution for Parkland is like blaming water for the sinking of the Titanic.
