The membership of Save Harford County Swimming Inc. humbly thanks County Executive Barry Glassman for being proactive and funding the capital budget request for repairs to the North Harford Middle School pool.
This pool is used for swim lessons, adult recreation and other aquatic activities. The County Executive's decision reflects his care about the health and safety of thousands of citizens.
While we are pleased by Mr. Glassman's action, we remain cognizant that these are trying fiscal times and tough decisions need to be made. That's evidenced by the County Executive's approving 80 percent of the requested operating budget for Harford County Public Schools, which resulted in a 20 percent reduction in the requested operating expenditure for the three swimming pools and associated programs. Hence, we return to the leadership of HCPS and the Board of Education to request that the shortfall in operating funds be appropriated, so the pools can operate and provide services to the community, as the County Executive clearly intended,
Given the impact of a 20 percent reduction in operating funds is approximately $100,000, Save Harford County Swimming, Inc. fund raises for and promotes the positives of swimming. We fulfilled the challenge of partnering with the BoE and galvanized Harford County supporters to act. The community conveyed a clear message that they want these pools open and adequately funded. these pools support programs such as swim lessons for our kids, adult recreation, and serves as sites for Special Olympians to practice, in addition to our highly-touted competitive high school and thriving summer teams
As always, Save Harford County Swimming Inc. stands ready to consult with the Board of Education and the HCPS administration to bridge budget inadequacies and do what the community and the County Executive desires – to keep our pools open.
