Four new members appointed to UM Upper Chesapeake Health’s board of directors

The University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health appointed four new members to its board of directors.

The new additions are: Alicia Cunningham, the University of Maryland Medical System’s senior vice president of corporate finance and revenue advisory services; V. Dixon King, Jr., president of UMUCH’s medical staff; Sanjeev Kumar, an anesthesiologist at UMUCH; and Lisa Rowen, UMMS’ chief nurse executive.

“Our new board members bring a variety of experience and backgrounds to assist us as we work to transform health care in our region,” UMUCH’s president and CEO Elizabeth Wise said in a news release. “We are committed to excellence through health care services, facilities and technologies, and our new board members will help us as we strive to create the healthiest community in Maryland.”

The appointments were effective July 1.

With more than 30 years of experience in healthcare finance, Cunningham will serve on the board’s finance committee. She joined the University of Maryland Medical System in 1996 as the University of Maryland Medical Center’s manager of reimbursement and clinical economics. She currently manages operational and strategic activities for reimbursement and revenue advisory services, as well as payer relations and contracting. She has a master’s of business administration from the University of Baltimore.

King, who was elected medical staff president in July, is a board-certified pathologist in anatomic and clinical pathology who will serve on the board’s quality of care committee. He’s the pathology department’s chair and the Kaufman Cancer Center’s co-medical director. He also chairs UMUCH’s cancer committee and is a member of several other committees.

King received a doctorate of medicine from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and a master’s of business administration from the University of Massachusetts. He’s currently pursuing a master’s of applied statistics in health sciences from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.

Kumar, who is board-certified in anesthesiology and bariatric medicine, was elected the board’s medical staff representative. He will serve on the quality of care committee. He received a medical education at King George’s Medical University in India.

Since becoming chief nurse executive in 2016, Rowen is the University of Maryland Medical System’s leader of nursing practice, standards of care and nursing professional development, as well as the partnership with nursing schools. She will be on the board’s quality of care committee.

Rowen previously served as the University of Maryland Medical Center’s senior vice president for patient care services and chief nursing officer from 2007 to 2021. She received bachelor’s degrees in art history and nursing from the University of Delaware, a master’s of science at the University of Maryland School of Nursing and a doctorate of nursing science at The Johns Hopkins University.
