Harford schools to close early Wednesday due to impending storms from Ida; staff is asked to work virtually

Due to impending weather, all Harford County Public Schools staff that is able to work virtually is being asked to do so on Wednesday.

All HCPS schools and buildings will close at 11 a.m., according to a notice posted on the school system’s website. All athletics and extracurricular activities are also canceled and there will be no travel for HCPS sponsored events, the notice states.

Students do not return to class until next Wednesday, Sept. 8, but teachers and staff are in buildings preparing for students’ return.

Tropical depression Ida continues to move toward Maryland, setting the stage for heavy rain Wednesday and Thursday, forecasters say.

Several severe weather warnings have been issued for the area beginning Wednesday, when the brunt of Ida could reach the region. Forecasters warned of the potential for flash floods, strong thunderstorms and tornadoes.

The Maryland Emergency Management Agency urged residents to remain vigilant of inclement weather over the next three days.
