Havre de Grace City Council introduces ordinance to waive taxes for Habitat for Humanity

The Havre de Grace City Council introduced an ordinance at their Monday meeting that would temporarily waive property taxes for certain Habitat for Humanity-owned properties during the construction phase.

Council member Carolyn Zinner said the city had provided similar accommodations for Habitat for Humanity before.

“At times, it becomes pretty expensive for them to carry the weight of the tax burden while they’re building a house,” Zinner said.

She said that the new owners of these properties would be then responsible for paying the taxes. Zinner said Habitat for Humanity is currently working on six residences in the city.

Council president Jim Ringsaker said the waiver would be for a maximum of 18 months and only includes city taxes.

A public hearing for this ordinance will be held Aug. 22.
