Havre de Grace school bell goes missing; police open investigation

A historic bell in front of Havre de Grace High School’s old building has gone missing, the school reported Friday.

In a tweet, the school said its historic 1955 bell disappeared from its old building on the 700 block of Constitution Avenue. The bell was set to be moved to the new school building on Lewis Lane in the city. The new school was set to open with the start of instruction this fall.

“We just want our bell back!” the school posted to Twitter.

Capt. Joseph Alton with the Havre de Grace Police Department said police received the report just before noon Friday and that officers have a lot of work to do. The old building is an active construction site, he said, so police are interviewing workers and gathering information.

Alton said the department was figuring out whether the bell’s disappearance was a theft or if it had been mistakenly moved.

“This is such a fresh investigation that we do not know that someone has not moved it into storage somewhere," he said. “The investigation is extremely preliminary and we are doing our best at this point to identify any potential suspects.”
