An armed man was shot by an Aberdeen Police officer late Monday night after officers responded to a local motel near Aberdeen Proving Ground where gunfire had been reported, according to Aberdeen Police.
Police were called to the Economy Inn in the 600 block of S. Philadelphia Boulevard in Aberdeen in Harford County about 11:34 p.m., police said.
A witness there described a man wearing "a baggy gray shirt and blue jeans" shooting a gun in the area of the motel, and officers quickly located a man matching that description near a vehicle in the motel's parking lot, police said.
As the officers approached the man, he "produced a handgun," and one of the officers fired two rounds at the man, police said.
The man, who police have not publicly identified, was struck once in the upper body, police said.
The officers then provided first aid as medical units responded. The man was taken to Harford Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in what was described as "stable" condition, police said.
No one else was injured during the confrontation, police said.
The officer who fired his service weapon, who has also not been identified, has been placed on routine administrative leave pending an investigation of the incident, police said.
