Two men were rescued from the St. Martin River near Ocean City on Monday after their sail boat capsized in high winds, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
A "good Samaritan" who noticed the sail boat overturned in the water alerted the Coast Guard's Ocean City station about 12:30 p.m., and a crew arrived at the scene about 15 minutes later, the Coast Guard said.
There, the crew noticed the mast of the overturned boat "raising and falling in and out of the water," and realized one of the boaters was trying to right the boat, said Petty Officer 1st Class William King, the Coast Guard's responding coxswain, in a statement.
His efforts were unsuccessful, as "each time he tried, the sail would catch the wind causing the hull to come back down on him," King said.
"The environmental conditions were a bit beyond the capability of the boaters, putting them in harm's way," King said.
The second boater had drifted about 25 yards from the boat, the Coast Guard said.
Both were wearing life jackets, which King said was "the best decision the boaters made."
Both boaters, who were not identified, were transferred to the Ocean Pines Marina, where they were checked by medical personnel.
No injuries were reported.
