Woman dead after being struck by car in Severna Park

An 86-year-old woman was killed after she was struck by a car early Thursday morning in Severna Park.

Anne Arundel police and firefighters responded to the area of Ritchie Highway and Cypress Cove Road around 5 a.m. where they found Catherine Kearney, of Severna Park, dead at the scene, police said.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Kearney left the nearby Kris Leigh Assisted Living home, where she had been a resident, and entered Ritchie Highway. There, she was struck by a 2011 Honda Civic traveling northbound.

Preliminarily, pedestrian error appears to be the cause of the accident. There are no streetlights or pedestrian control devices in the area and it was dark when the accident occurred, police said.

Police have identified the driver of the Honda as 29-year-old Stephen Alt of Denton. Speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said.

The road was closed for two-and-a-half hours following the accident.

This is the fourth fatal accident involving a pedestrian to be investigated by county police so far this year, police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said.

An investigation by the police's Traffic Safety Section remained ongoing Thursday afternoon.
