About 200 Carroll County kids joined in the sixth annual Shop with a Cop event Monday afternoon at Dutterer’s Park in Westminster, hosted by the Westminster Police Department, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, the Carroll County Health Department and The Shepherd’s Staff.
Each child who attended was paired with a police officer to “shop” for free school supplies, all packed into a brand-new backpack to ensure students in need would be prepared for the new school year.
Brenda Meadows, executive director of The Shepherd’s Staff, said the event is “an inspiring way to kick off the school year.”
Carroll County Public Schools students start classes on Sept. 6.
Along with free school supplies, participants could receive free haircuts offered by The Spa on West Main, tour police vehicles and a school bus, receive a free vision screening from WalMart Optometry and enjoy treats from Kona Ice or The Cow, a Westminster ice cream shop.
