Women's basketball: Mount picked seventh in NEC

Coming off the program's first-ever trip to the Postseason WNIT, the Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team was selected seventh in the annual Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, it was announced Tuesday at the NEC Basketball "Social" Media Day at Barclays Center.

Defending champion Robert Morris received five first-place votes to take the top spot, followed by Sacred Heart in second with four top votes. St. Francis Brooklyn took home the other first-place vote and was selected third in the poll.

Wagner, Saint Francis U and Bryant were picked fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Selected seventh, Mount St. Mary's finished ahead of LIU Brooklyn in eighth and Central Connecticut and Fairleigh Dickinson, which tied for ninth.

The Mount returns eight letterwinners from last year's squad, which finished second in the NEC regular season standings and qualified for the NEC Semifinals. Last year's 19-14 overall record was the program's first winning season since the 2000-01 campaign.

The Mountaineers begin the eighth season under Head Coach Bryan Whitten at Maryland on Nov. 14 at 11 a.m.
