Chris Wray's steal in the final seconds helped Mount St. Mary's capture a 78-76 overtime win against host George Mason in men's basketball action Friday night in Fairfax, Va.
Wray led the Mountaineers to their first win (1-3) with a team-high 21 points on 10-for-13 shooting. He added 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Miles Wilson had 12 points, while Elijah Long and Junior Robinson had 11 points apiece.
The Mount and Mason were tied 76-76 with 3.7 seconds left and MSM called a timeout. Wray got the ball down low and converted a dunk with 1.3 seconds to go, giving the Mountaineers a 78-76 lead. Wray then grabbed a steal to secure the win.
MSM led 38-37 at halftime but trailed 60-55 with 6:06 left in regulation. Greg Alexander canned a 3-pointer with 5:38 to go, cutting the lead to 60-58.
The Patriots surged ahead 63-58 at the 4:21 mark, but MSM answered 22 seconds later with a layup from Wilson. Robinson sank a jumper to make it 63-62, and another layup from Wilson gave the Mount a 64-63 lead with 2:30 to play.
The Mount led 70-67 in the final seconds of regulation, but George Mason's Otis Livington drained a 3-pointer that sent the game into overtime.
Jalen Jenkins led the Patriots with 23 points, a game high, but he was the only Mason player in double figures.
Ryan Gomes (Westminster) got the start and played six minutes, going 0-for-2 from the floor but collecting one block on defense.
Mount St. Mary's, having already played West Virginia, Iowa State, and Minnesota, visits Southern Illinois on Monday and UT-Arlington on Wednesday before playing at Michigan on Nov. 26.
A trip to Arkansas follows Nov. 28, and the Mount takes on in-state rival Loyola on Dec. 3. MSM's first home game is Dec. 7 against UMBC.
