Track & Field: Century boys win seventh straight 2A West crown

Saturday marked the final day of competition in the Class 2A West Region track meet and athletes from across the region continued to compete for state qualification.

Carroll County is once again sending a slew of these athletes to Morgan State University next weekend, and Century's boys will arrive as region victors once again.

The Knights totaled 159 points, good for their seventh straight regional title. Walkersville took first on the girls side with 105 points, just 13 points ahead of second place South Carroll (92).

Senior sprinter Henry Seabrook won two regional titles for Century with victories in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Seabrook said he simply wanted to score points to help get his team to next weekend's state meet and, hopefully, find success there as well.

"I think the 2A West is one of the hardest regions in the state and there's a couple kids that really push people," Seabrook said. "One in particular was Cameron Vereen from Oakland Mills — he ran a 10.79 in prelims so I was hoping he would carry me through. It was a really good race between me and him and the other competitors but I think everyone ran well. I think everyone is just getting ready for states now."

Seabrook joined teammates Stephen Shinholt, Jalen Stanton, and Tavian Montgomery in the Knights' 4x100 relay and together, the boys captured a regional title with a 43.85-second finish.

Winters Mill's Dimeon Wright jumped 43-1 for the triple jump title. Century's Bryce Harrell was third (41-11) and Fru Bayelle of Francis Scott Key took third (41-7.75). Zach Fenton and Jacob Spera came in third and fourth in the 1,600 run to qualify for the state meet.

Thursday's pole vault results will send nine athletes to the state meet. Liberty's Zach Stump and Braedan Balch finished second and third behind Century's Kyle Bryant. Patrick Tunkel from South Carroll and Century's James Yankowski will also participate at states.

South Carroll's girls relay team of Brooke Flanigan, Megan O'Neill, Karly Eudy and Allie Zolkiewicz raced to a first-place finish in 4:06.95 — Zolkiewicz ran the anchor leg, beating out Catoctin and Liberty in the final 100 meters.

"I'm really happy," Zolkiewicz said. "The girls got us in a really great position, they had really amazing legs. We all worked together and they put it all out there on the track so when I got the baton I wanted to run a fast leg for them and run as hard as I could to catch us up."

Flanigan, a freshman who also won the 300 hurdles, started the Cavs off and settled comfortably into third place. When O'Neill got the baton, she continued to run in third but inched closer to the next runner by the time the baton was handed off to Eudy.

"From Megan, I was still in third trying to catch up," Eudy said. "Once I got to that last 200, I knew I had to pick it up and that last 100, I was dying but I was just waiting to get it to Allie."

Zolkiewicz also raced to a region title victory in the 400 dash (58.41). Francis Scott Key's Emma Taggart cleared 5-2 to take first place in the high jump — Liberty's Erin Lance finished third and Macy Hamlett from Century took fourth.

SC's girls were still fresh from Thursday's victorious 4x800 relay, the first event of the meet. The four embraced when Zolkiewicz crossed the finish line to conclude the meet's final girls event.

"Allie was at least 40 meters behind getting the baton and then she was coming around," O'Neill said. "We were looking at the finish line and me and Brooke were wondering if she was really coming into first. It was amazing."

Added Eudy: "Way to go us."
