Prep Notebook: SC's Cave, Smith make college choices

South Carroll seniors Brian Cave and CJ Smith recently took part in a signing ceremony and made their college decisions official, meaning the Cavaliers fall sports standouts will be extending their athletic careers.

Cave, the Times Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year in 2015, is headed to UMBC, while Smith, the Times Golf Player of the Player for a second year in a row last fall, will head to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Cave won the county meet championship in 16 minutes, 34 seconds, the won the Class 2A West meet in 16:52 the following week. His fall culminated with a gold medal at the 2A state meet (16:33.7).

Smith won the Class 2A-1A District I tourney with an even-par 71, which qualified him to play at the state tournament. Smith's final high school golf event saw him finish in the top 20.

Colson, Warther headed to Under Armour lax game

Future college teammates Lizzie Colson (Manchester Valley) and Hannah Warther (Century) will get to join forces before they officially do so at University of Maryland next year.

The girls lacrosse standouts are part of the girls roster for the Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Game, set for July 2 at Towson University. The event, now in its 11th year, is highlighted by boys and girls senior games, showcasing 88 of the country's top players in North vs. South format.

The Mavericks and Knights face each other next Monday in the Carroll County Athletic League county championship game, at North Carroll High School's Powelson Field.

MV's new all-time leader

Manchester Valley senior Colin Piper recently became the boys lacrosse program's all-time leading scorer in a game against North Carroll last Monday.

Piper is among the county's top scorers this season with 51 points on 28 goals and 23 assists. He has 150 points in his three-year varsity career, surpassing the previous mark of 144 set by 2013 graduate Brendan Krivak.

It is only the seventh year for the program, but Piper and Krivak are the only Mavericks players to have eclipsed the century mark in points.

"I'm proud of him, he works hard," said Man Valley coach John Piper, Colin's father. "As a coach and if he was bigger and a little quicker, he'd probably be a first team all-countian and maybe even chance for Player of the Year. His vision, his left hand, his right hand, drive to both sides, I don't think there are many that are going to compete with that. Unfortunately his gene pool doesn't give him the speed or the size, but he works hard."

Carroll football recognized by Baltimore Touchdown Club

In mid-March the Baltimore Touchdown Club announced its Super 22 selections, which is a team of players from around the state who earned postseason accolades following their junior seasons. The BTC also recognized this year's Hall of Fame award winners, and former county coach Ken Johnson received one of three Augie Weibel Legends awards.

Johnson coached at Liberty from 1993-2001, then moved to Winters Mill and guided the Falcons from 2002-12. His 85 all-time wins in Carroll are second only to longtime South Carroll coach Ken Parker's 125.

This year's BTC Super 22 selections from Carroll are: Century lineman Sam Rothstein; Liberty defensive back Spencer Kirin; Manchester Valley tight end Chandler Breeden; South Carroll linebacker Henry Cook and athlete Jamar Williams; and Westminster kicker Ian Gould.
