Friday just got a lot busier around the county with Carroll's high school sports teams competing in regional playoff games.
That's because the steady rain that fell in and around Carroll washed out Thursday's slate of baseball and softball contests, pushing those games to Friday along with the already scheduled boys and girls lacrosse playoff games.
Baseball and softball are in the sectional quarterfinal round (playoff openers) while lacrosse has reached the sectional semifinals.
Baseball has one intra-county game set for Friday when South Carroll (6-11) hosts Winters Mill (6-12) in a Class 2A West Section 2 quarterfinal. The Cavaliers beat the Falcons twice during the regular season by a combined 22-11. WM had won six of eight before ending its regular season with three consecutive losses.
In other 2A West softball action Friday, Century (12-8) hosts Francis Scott Key (2-12) in a Section 2 quarterfinal. The Knights have won four of their last six, and recently clipped Smithsburg 16-12 on a walk-off grand slam in the seventh inning. Key snapped a nine-game losing skid by beating South Hagerstown on Monday.
Winters Mill (11-7) hosts Liberty (11-8) in another Section 2 quarterfinal Friday. These county foes played a pair of tight regular-season contests — the Lions won 5-4 on April 12; the Falcons prevailed 3-2 on April 28.
Four county boys lacrosse teams remain alive in the regional playoffs. Liberty (5-10) visits Northwestern on Friday in a 2A-1A West Section 1 semifinal, while South Carroll (10-5) hosts Catoctin and Century (9-6) takes on Boonsboro in Section 2 semifinals. That game has been relocated to Western Regional Park in Howard County to use artificial turf.
County champion Westminster (13-1) had a bye in the quarterfinals and hosts Urbana on Saturday at noon in a 4A-3A South Section semifinal.
Five county girls lacrosse squads are playing Friday.
Liberty (6-8) takes on Edmondson at Western Regional Park in a 2A-1A West Section 1 semifinal after receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, while Century (12-3) hosts Brunswick and South Carroll (9-6) faces Boonsboro at North Hagerstown in 2A-1A West Section semifinals.
Manchester Valley (13-2) hosts Marriotts Ridge in a 3A-2A South Section 1 semifinal, and Westminster (12-2) hosts Catonsville in a 4A-3A South Section 1 semifinal.
The Owls, who shared the county title this spring with Century and Man Valley, had a bye in the quarterfinals.
The track and field county meet went on as scheduled Thursday.
The Region VII tennis tournament, which is being held at Liberty and South Carroll high schools and features players from all of the county schools, has already been rescheduled to begin Monday. The tournament was originally set to start Saturday, but the forecast is calling for more rain.
Saturday is the scheduled day for baseball and softball section semifinals, but inclement weather could force more postponements. Games were also shuffled around because of proms being held this weekend.
