The postseason is approaching for Carroll's prep winter sports teams, with two weeks to go in the basketball regular season and wrestling about to get set for three weekends of championship tournaments.
As for indoor track, the Class 2A and 1A state meets were postponed Monday because of inclement weather. The 4A and 3A (Westminster athletes) meets are still scheduled for Tuesday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, with a makeup date for the 2A (Century, Francis Scott Key, Liberty, South Carroll, Winters Mill) and 1A (Manchester Valley, North Carroll) to be determined Tuesday.
In boys basketball, Winters Mill (10-1 in the county) holds a slight edge over Century (10-2) in the Hersh Division, with the division winner facing the Cowan champ — adhering to the Carroll County Athletic League rules — in the county title game Feb. 23 at South Carroll High School at 7 p.m. The Falcons have Liberty, FSK, and Westminster as remaining county opponents. The Liberty game was postponed from Friday, and the Key contest was postponed Monday, and neither had makeup dates as of Monday night. The Falcons and Owls are set to play Wednesday.
Winters Mill is 3-0 against the Lions, Eagles, and Owls this season, having beaten all three opponents the first time around.
Century, the reigning county champion, has South Carroll on Tuesday and North Carroll on Wednesday. The Knights beat the Cavs 51-41 back on Jan. 19 in a game that lasted a little more than an hour. Juniors Chris Norman and Zach Tucker combined for 28 points for Century.
The Cavaliers are 7-5 against county foes and in first place in the Cowan standings with FSK (6-7) close behind.
The girls basketball county title tilt is already set, with the game slated for Feb. 23 at South Carroll High at 5:30.
Manchester Valley remains unbeaten at 19-0 (11-0 county) and leading the Cowan with three county games to go. SC is second at 8-4.
Meanwhile, Liberty (10-2) has the Hersh locked up. The Lions have two county games remaining, with second-place Winters Mill at 6-5.
The Lions, who won the county crown last season, face the Mavericks on Wednesday in Manchester for their second regular-season meeting. MV won the first game 56-54 on Dec. 18 behind a big effort from Mackenzie DeWees — the sophomore and reigning Times Player of the Year totaled 21 points, 17 rebounds, seven steals, and five assists.
They'll face each other again six days later for the county championship.
Wrestling's annual county tournament is on for this weekend. The tourney's first two rounds are set for Friday at Westminster High School, and the event concludes Saturday at South Carroll.
Medal rounds are scheduled to begin Saturday at 4 p.m., meaning the finals should start around 6.
South Carroll won the county tourney title last year, SC's first since 2007, thanks to eight finalists and six champions. Four of them are back to go after another individual title — junior Joey Thomas, senior Tom Boldosser, junior Jamar Williams, and senior Talmadge Eller.
South Carroll, which last year went on to win regional and state tourney titles, is going after its seventh county tournament team crown but has never won back-to-back titles.
