Local Roundup: Westminster boys, girls cross country teams heading to states

Westminster's boys cross country team had three runners finish in the top 15 at Thursday's Class 3A West Region meet, leading the Owls to a second-place finish at Urbana High School.

Noah Griffin was Westminster's top runner with a seventh-place finish, followed by Brandon Arbaugh (10th) and Charlie Ferguson (15th).


The Owls totaled 86 points, two better than Oakdale's 88, for second place, and qualified for the 3A state meet Nov. 12 at Hereford High School.

Poolesville won the boys team title with 70.

Manchester Valley placed 10th out of 13 teams with 273 points. Andrew Jackson led MV with a 19th-place finish.

On the girls side, Westminster placed third out of 11 teams with 101 points. Jilly Wagner ran ninth overall and teammate Erin McGrath was 12th.

Man Valley was 11th with 335 points, and Marisa Spierko was the Mavericks' top runner at 61st.

Recap: At Winfield, the Cavaliers (10-3-3) won their fourth in a row and advanced to the 2A West Region final Tuesday at Middletown. Nico Lindsay scored in the first half and SC's defense posted its eighth shutout (third in a row).

Recap: At Manchester, the Mavericks ended their season at 2-8. Michael Dickens caught a touchdown pass from Cooper Hastings and Dayne Koontz added the PAT. Man Valley also scored on a safety.
