Coach: Jess Goodwin, 2nd year

Last year's record: 6-10, 1-6 county

First game: Sept. 7 at Garrison Forest, 4

Key losses: Katie Armstrong, Sarah Jacobs, Kassie Kavoukas

Key returners: Sofia Filippi, senior MF; Lauren Martin, senior F; Kasie Pratesi, senior F; Kelsey Weishaar, junior MF.

Outlook: A disappointing fall for the Knights ended with 11 senior graduating, so this season is a fresh start of sorts. Martin had three goals and two assists in 2015, making her the leading returning scorer. "Their attitude and dedication makes me excited for the upcoming season," Goodwin said via email.

Francis Scott Key

Coach: Lori Knights, 3rd year

Last year's record: 8-7, 1-6 county

First game: Sept. 2 at Thomas Johnson, 4

Key losses: Julie Goodman, Emily Kurtz, Taylor Nelson

Key returners: Kourtney Black, junior GK; Korey Fine, senior D/MF; Heather Rohwein, senior F.

Outlook: A 1-6 county record didn't mean much when the Eagles soared all the way to the regional final and took Man Valley to penalty strokes. FSK lost its top scorer to graduation in Goodman, but Rohwein had four goals and four assists in 2015. "The enthusiasm and desire to go farther this season is tremendous," Knights said via email.

Coach: Brenda Strohmer, 6th year

Last year's record: 10-5, 5-2 county

First game: Sept. 6 vs. Frederick, 4

Key losses: Abby Overman, Emma Tilson

Key returners: Abbie Busch, senior MF; Ashley Caldwell, senior F; Heidi Ellis, sophomore MF; Grace Fenner, sophomore GK; Hannah Miller, senior F; Branin Ward, junior MF.

Outlook: The Lions became county title contenders last fall for the first time in two decades, and this fall they want to maintain that status. To help, Miller (12 goals, 10 assists) is one of several key returners for Liberty. She earned Times first-team all-county honors in 2015.

Manchester Valley

Coach: Terry Duryea, 2nd year

Last year's record: 14-4, 5-2 county

First game: Sept. 3 at Southern HS tournament

Key losses: Jill Bosley, Rosalia Cappadora, Kira Mitchell

Key returners: Meghan Harmon, senior MF; Jacie Wood, senior GK.

Outlook: Duryea guided the Mavs to the 1A state semifinals last fall, and this season she gets a few of North Carroll's all-county players from 2015 in Harmon and Wood. Also, several North Carroll players have joined the mix. Gone is Cappadora, the reigning Times Player of the Year. Duryea said via email the team has "merged together beautifully."

South Carroll

Coach: Julie Radnoff, 1st year

Last year's record: 4-10, 3-4 county

First game: Sept. 6 at Mount de Sales, 4

Key losses: Abby Barna, Keriann McTavish

Key returners: Tessa Corio, senior MF; Kaitlyn Ensko, senior D; Madi Radnoff, junior MF; Taylor Trieschman, junior D.

Outlook: Radnoff comes up from junior varsity and takes over for Gayle Taylor as Cavs' varsity coach. And she has daughter Madi coming back after a Times first-team all-county sophomore season. The midfielder led South Carroll in scoring with three goals and four assists.

Coach: Katie Corson, 2nd year

Last year's record: 13-7, 6-1 county

First game: Sept. 3 at South River HS tournament

Key losses: Jess Schuchardt, Kerri Virtz

Key returners: Emily Dudley, senior F; Veronica Maring, sophomore F; Haleigh Moore, sophomore, F; Lauren Rogalski, senior D; Emily Pulkowski, senior MF.

Outlook: A regional title likely felt bittersweet after the Owls lost in the 3A state final last season. That "young and inexperienced" team now has eight starters returning, led by Times first-team all-county picks in Moore (38 points) and Dudley (29). "I am extremely excited to see what this team will bring," Corson said via email.

Winters Mill

Coach: Christine Erlichman, 1st year

Last year's record: 4-9-1, 1-6 county

First game: Sept. 2 vs. Perry Hall, 4

Key loss: Coeli Love

Key returners: Georgi Chiavacci, senior F; Tess Myers, senior D; Hannah Wheeler, senior MF/F.

Outlook: Erlichman, taking over for Laurie Moody Naill, inherits a Falcons squad with six returning seniors, and few impact players at that. Chiavacci led WM in scoring last fall with 11 goals and seven assists. Winters Mill returns nine players from last fall.
