Football: Big defensive night leads WM to win in opener

After the Winters Mill coaches gave their jubilant post-game speeches, players turned to senior defensive lineman Carl Igweh.

They wanted him in the center of the celebration and for good reason.

Igweh's four sacks and repeated quarterback hurries pushed Winters Mill to a 21-9 victory over a Patterson Mill team starting two sons of former Ravens receiver Qadry Ismail.

The win matches Winters Mill's win total win from last year. The Falcons (1-0) have won just one game each of the past two seasons.

"We did the best we could," said Igweh, referring to a defense that finished with seven sacks. "We really wanted this one."

Junior Jason Utz, who had two of those sacks, hauled in a 9-yard touchdown pass that gave Winters Mill a 14-9 lead midway through the fourth quarter. The defense made it stand, making it almost impossible for Patterson Mill quarterback Qadir Ismail to get off a pass.

Utz sealed the game with a 3-yard touchdown.

A Patterson Mill comeback attempt was foiled by a Winters Mill sack and fumble recovery by Kyle Krolicki.

Winters Mill quarterback Patrick Brown had 61 yards rushing and 145 yards passing.

It wasn't a perfect Winters Mill performance. An intentional grounding penalty in the end zone set up a Patterson Mill safety and a 9-7 lead. A holding penalty negated a Winters Mill first half touchdown.

But unlike past years, when missteps tended to snowball, the Falcons kept their composure. Sophomore running back Glen Acha had 51 yards rushing, featuring a nifty spin move on some of his runs. Kyle Fisher hauled in an 11-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.

When the game ended, the white-clad Winters Mill student section lined the home gate, cheering on the celebrating football players.

"I'm so happy for you guys," upbeat coach Matt Miller said to his players after the game. "You guys earned it."
