The midway point of the 2021 winter high school sports season is here in Carroll County, but it’s beginning with some alterations.
Monday’s slate of basketball games was postponed because of impending inclement weather, and the schedule itself looks different once again because of COVID-19 concerns. Century, Francis Scott Key, Westminster, and Winters Mill’s girls basketball teams are not playing this week, along with FSK, Westminster, and Winters Mill’s boys junior varsity teams.
Liberty tops the Carroll County Athletic League girls hoops standings at 6-0, with Century sitting in second place at 5-1. The Lions and Knights were set to face each other Friday. Manchester Valley (3-3) had Century on Monday, but that game was postponed along with three varsity boys games and four JV contests.
South Carroll (4-2) was set to visit Winters Mill (1-5) on Tuesday, but that girls game is off for now. Westminster (2-4), last year’s county champion, had a home game Wednesday with Liberty, but it’s postponed. And Francis Scott Key (0-6) had Winters Mill on Friday, but the Eagles will have to wait a little longer to go after their first victory.
In boys basketball, first-place Century (3-0) had its Monday game with Manchester Valley (0-5) wiped out when after-school activities were postponed with bad weather in the forecast. Liberty (2-1) had a road matchup Monday with Westminster (3-3), and Francis Scott Key (2-3) had its visit to Winters Mill (0-2) bagged as well. The Lions now host the Owls on Tuesday as a rescheduled contest.
South Carroll (5-1) has Winters Mill at home Wednesday. Century is the reigning CCAL champion.
Wrestling resumes Tuesday with an intriguing matchup of unbeaten South Carroll (5-0) and Man Valley (3-1) in Manchester. Last year’s dual in Winfield went to the Cavaliers, who clipped the Mavericks 34-30 with a victory in the final bout of the match. The Cavs went on to win the CCAL title, while Man Valley won its first county wrestling tournament title but fell just short in the county title chase.
Westminster (3-1) hosts city rival Winters Mill (2-2) on Tuesday, and Century (0-3) hosts FSK (0-5) as each county team looks for its first win. Liberty (1-2) continues its season Thursday with a home match against Key.
Indoor track concludes Saturday with Century and Manchester Valley hosting meets outside as they have twice before. Century hosts Westminster and Winters Mill, while Man Valley welcomes FSK, Liberty, and South Carroll. The Jan. 23 meets were canceled because of cold temperatures.
