We’ve reached the sectional final round of the postseason in field hockey, and five Carroll County teams are still alive for Monday afternoon contests.

Four of them face off against each other, and the fifth plays at home, giving local fans three chances to stay within the county to watch the games.


In Class 1A West, South Carroll travels to Francis Scott Key for the Section 1 final. It’s a rematch of last year’s sectional title game, won in Winfield by the Eagles in penalty strokes.

FSK claimed its first regional championship in 21 years last fall, and played in the 1A state final.

The Cavaliers blasted Pikesville last week to reach the sectional finals, while Francis Scott Key had a bye to this round.

Over in 2A West in the Section 1 final, Liberty faces Century at home as the Lions try to knock off the Knights for a second time this month. The rivals met Oct. 11 at Century, and Liberty prevailed 1-0 to win the Carroll County Athletic League title.

It marked the Lions’ first county crown in 36 years.

Liberty beat Manchester Valley last week in the sectional semifinals; Century took care of Middletown to advance.

Westminster is in the 3A West Section 1 final and the Owls host Thomas Johnson. They took care of Frederick in the semifinals last week to advance.


The boys and girls soccer regional playoffs resume Tuesday.

On the boys side, Francis Scott Key visits Clear Spring in a 1A West Section 2 semifinal. The Eagles blanked Smithsburg last week in their opener.

Over in 2A West, there’s an intracounty clash on tap Tuesday when South Carroll visits Century in a Section 1 semifinal. The Knights hosted the Cavaliers on Oct. 2 and won 1-0.

Liberty visits Oakdale on Tuesday in the other semifinal.

County champion Manchester Valley hosts Rockville on Tuesday in a 3A West Section 1 semifinal, while Westminster travels to Magruder on Tuesday in another semifinal.

The Mavericks had a bye in the opening round, and the Owls edged Blake to advance. They could meet each other in the sectional final Friday.

FSK’s girls soccer team advanced in the 1A West playoffs last week with a win over Brunswick. The Eagles play at Clear Spring on Tuesday in a Section 2 semifinal.


In 2A West, Century hosts South Carroll on Tuesday in a Section 1 semifinal. These rivals last met Oct. 2, and the Knights won 1-0 at Parker Field.

Liberty, which clipped county champion Winters Mill in penalty kicks last week to advance, travels to Oakdale on Tuesday.

Westminster hosts Magruder in a 3A West Section 1 semifinal Tuesday, while Manchester Valley visits Rockville in the other semifinal.

Both teams had byes in the opening round.


The seeding for regional volleyball playoffs is slated for Monday, and sectional quarterfinals begin Thursday.

Westminster and Winters Mill split the Carroll County Athletic League title with wins last week. The Owls and Falcons finished with matching 11-1 county records, and split their regular-season series.

Cross Country

It’s regional meet week for Carroll’s runners.

The 2A West meet is set for Liberty High School on Thursday. The Lions, who won the boys county meet title last week, will be joined by Century, South Carroll, and Winters Mill.

The Cavaliers won the girls county meet crown last week.

Francis Scott Key is at the 1A West meet, Thursday at Allegany College.

Man Valley and Westminster run at the 3A West meet Thursday at Watkins Mill High School.
