Century and South Carroll’s girls lacrosse teams are set to square off Monday for the first time since the Knights defeated the Cavaliers in a Class 2A West Section 1 semifinal at Parker Field last spring.
Three weeks prior to that defeat, the Cavaliers beat Century for the first time in program history after going 0-18 against the Knights in their previous meetings.
Century (8-1, 3-0 in the Carroll County Athletic League) dropped its first game of this season against Maryvale Prep, but has won eight straight games since. South Carroll (7-0, 2-0) remains undefeated through seven starts entering Monday’s game against the Knights.
“South Carroll is a great team and we expect a highly competitive, well-skilled game,” Knights coach Becky Groves said. “It should be fun to watch the girls compete.”
Century features the county’s leading scorer in sophomore Demma Hall, who had 26 goals and 23 assists before helping the Knights beat Westminster 9-7 last Thursday. Hall had two goals and one assist against the Owls, who were 3-0 in CCAL play prior to that contest.
The Cavaliers opened county play with a 24-9 victory over Winters Mill and bested Liberty two days after. SC coach Brigid McTavish said her girls are always looking forward to playing county teams and are excited to keep pushing forward.
“The girls are focused, working hard and pumped to get the game going,” McTavish said. “We expect it to be a battle from the first draw to the last second and at no point can we let our guard down because Century is an extremely tough team.
“This game is going to show a lot of talent, hard work and heart on both sides and we couldn’t be more excited.”
Liberty (5-2, 1-2) won five straight games before falling to Westminster and South Carroll last week. The Lions take on Manchester Valley at Liberty on Wednesday and both teams look to improve their records with a win.
Westminster (4-3, 3-1) hosts city rival Winters Mill (2-6, 0-2) on Thursday.
Century went undefeated through five starts before falling to Westminster at Ruby Field last week. The Owls (9-0, 4-0 CCAL) remain undefeated entering Wednesday’s matchup at Winters Mill (3-3, 0-2). The Knights will take on South Carroll on Monday at home.
Both Century (7-1, 2-1) and Westminster won a pair of games Saturday at Western Regional Park — the Knights and Owls each took down Glenelg and River Hill.
Century (7-3, 5-2 CCAL) had its six-game winning streak snapped when Manchester Valley beat the Knights last week, and they look to rebound Monday against South Carroll (5-3, 4-3). The Cavaliers defeated the Knights on March 29, but recently fell to Westminster and Winters Mill.
The Owls (5-4, 4-2) host Liberty on Monday and are on a four-game win streak that includes county victories against South Carroll and Francis Scott Key.
Century (4-6, 4-4 CCAL) fell to Manchester Valley last week and the Mavericks swept the regular-season series against the reigning county champions. The Mavericks (6-3, 5-0) remain undefeated in CCAL play entering Monday’s game against Winters Mill (3-3, 2-2).
The Eagles (2-5, 1-5) dropped their next four games after defeating South Carroll on April 1. The Lions (2-5, 2-3) have two straight county wins against FSK and Century heading into Monday’s game against Westminster.
