High School Sports: Carroll County winter teams getting ready to heat back up

The new year has arrived, school is back in session, and Carroll County’s winter sports teams are set to resume their regular-season schedules this week.

Century’s boys basketball team hosts South Carroll in a Carroll County Athletic League clash Wednesday night at 6:30. Knights guard Carter Truby most recently earned all-tournament honors at the conclusion of the Liberty Holiday Tournament last week, while SC guard Dylan Graham did the same.


Winters Mill’s boys hoops squad travels to Manchester Valley, and the Mavericks’ girls head to Winters Mill to resume CCAL play. South Carroll hosts Century’s girls squad Wednesday as well.

Francis Scott Key’s girls host the Cavaliers on Friday and remain the county’s top team at 7-1. The Cavs improved to 4-3 with a holiday tournament victory over Walter Johnson last week, while Key went 1-1 at the Holly & Hoops tourney.

Westminster (5-3) hosts Winters Mill in a city clash Friday at 5.

Liberty’s boys and girls basketball squads take on Tuscarora in a pair of non-county contests on Thursday. The Lions’ boys most recently went 2-0 at their home holiday tournament last week and remain undefeated at 7-0.

Guard Jack Merchak garnered Most Valuable Player honors at Liberty’s holiday tournament, which included county foes Century, South Carroll, and Westminster.

Francis Scott Key’s wrestling squad welcomes Manchester Valley and South Carroll for a tri-match Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The Mavericks went 5-4 at the Duals at Westminster last week — Adam Mattson went 9-0 and Chad Schaffer finished with 7-2 record for the Mavericks.

There were 13 teams from across the region that competed in the annual Duals that concluded at Westminster High School on Friday. Carroll had additional representation from Liberty (8-1 at the Duals) and Westminster (5-5) as well.

Noah Wienclawski went 9-0 for the Lions, and was Carroll’s only other unbeaten wrestlers at the Duals.

Meanwhile, South Carroll placed seventh out of 13 teams at the Damascus Holiday Tournament. The Cavs crowned one champion in freshman Ryan Athey (106 pounds).

Winters Mill travels to Century for a CCAL wrestling matchup Thursday night at 6, and the Falcons host FSK on Friday at 4. The Knights had three wrestlers, Lorenzo Lira, Alex Ellis, and Tom Morey, go 2-0 at a tri-meet last Saturday.

Indoor track is back in action this week and Carroll’s squads have a full slate of meets. Century and South Carroll travel to Hagerstown Community College on Saturday to compete in the annual Smithsburg Invitational.

The Cavs won the girls team championship in last year’s 18-team invite; the Knights’ boys placed seventh out of 17 teams in 2018.

Manchester Valley participates in the Knights Invitational at CCBC-Essex on Friday, and the Mavericks are also on the schedule for the Kevin Dare Invitational at Penn State on Saturday.


Francis Scott Key, Liberty, South Carroll, and Winters Mill travel to HCC for the Western Maryland Winter Classic on Friday, and Westminster will compete in the SMAC Invitational at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex on Saturday.
