Carroll Varsity Roundup: Liberty goes 2-0 at home holiday tourney after beating City College

Liberty needed overtime to dispatch its opponent Thursday night at the Liberty Holiday Basketball Tournament, but on Friday the Lions didn’t have to stress as much.

That’s because they handled City College 66-58 to finish 2-0 at their home tourney.


Jack Merchak led Liberty (7-0) with 16 points and Cam Blankenship scored 15. Merchak garnered Most Valuable Players for the tournament.

Tristan Kent scored 11 and Connor Stewart netted 10. Kent earned all-tournament honors.


Westminster 75, Catoctin 53

Recap: At Eldersburg, Joe Wright posted 17 points and nine rebounds for the Owls (4-3), and earned all-tournament honors at the Liberty Holiday Tournament.

Marriotts Ridge 65, Century 54

Recap: At Eldersburg, Century fell to 5-2 despite 14 points from Jared Lamb. Carter Truby earned all-tourney status for the Knights at the Liberty Holiday Tournament.


Parkville 64, Francis Scott Key 62

Recap: At Columbia, Noah Vipond dominated with 43 points, a career high, and 11 rebounds but the Eagles (1-7) came up short in the Oakland Mills holiday tourney.

Winters Mill 62, Catonsville 52

Recap: At Westminster on Thursday, Chandler Gentzel poured in 32 points for the Falcons (2-4) in their home holiday tournament opener. Khy Torian had 10 points and Alan Jean-Joseph grabbed 10 rebounds. WM faced Lake Cilfton late Friday night.

Gerstell 70, Benedictine 67

Recap: At Richmond, Va., on Thursday, the Falcons improved to 7-4 and got a career-high 25 points from Ahmad Harrison. Anthony Carpenter scored 18 and Tyler Tillery added 12. Gerstell had another game Friday night in the Benedictine Capital Christmas Classic.

Girls Basketball

Francis Scott Key 52, Holy Trinity 33

Recap: At Towson, Karla Stonesifer and Kennedy Cornick paced the Eagles (7-1) at the Holly & Hoops holiday tourney with 11 points apiece. Rachel Wright scored eight for FSK.

South Carroll 50, Walter Johnson 31

Recap: At Middletown, the Cavaliers improved to 4-3 with a holiday tourney victory behind 12 points from Rachel Tackett.

Winters Mill 60, Wheaton 26

Recap: At Westminster, 10 players scored in a home holiday tournament win for the Falcons (2-4). Erin Snyder had 12 points and Allie Cullison scored 11. WM collected 28 offensive rebounds in the win.

Dulaney 55, Century 35

Recap: At Fallston, the Knights (2-7) dropped the Vernon Brown Memorial Tournament title game despite 11 points from Sarah Deese and seven from Demma Hall.

Hammond 77, Liberty 73

Recap: At Ellicott City, Rachel Thiem led the Lions (2-6) with 21 points as they finished play in the Howard Holiday Tournament. Jess Littlejohn and Jordan Nastos each scored 11.

Spalding 49, Gerstell 17

Recap: At Annapolis on Thursday, the Falcons dealt with missing four players (two starters) and fell in their Annapolis Area Christian Christmas Tournament opener. Kylie Redman had six points for Gerstell.


SC’s Athey wins at Damascus tourney

Recap: At Damascus, Ryan Athey won at 106 pounds for the Cavaliers, who placed seventh out of 13 teams at the Damascus Holiday Tournament with 66.5 points. Steven Dahl (152) was second, Pat Quinn (285) took third, and Jake Rippeon (132) placed fourth. Glenelg won the team title with 144 points.
